Dear Notre Dame alumnus,

Thank you for helping us out with this survey. You will find seven different scenarios below. After reading each scenario, you will be asked to answer six questions regarding your opinion of the situation. Following these scenarios, you will be asked some short questions about your own behavior. Finally, there are a few demographic questions that we would like you to answer as well.

On the letter we sent you in the mail, there should be an identification number. Please be sure to enter your identification number at the beginning of the survey. All of your responses will be held strictly confidential and the survey should only take 15 - 20 minutes to complete.

If you have any questions or concerns, I can be reached at mbolino@nd.edu or 574-631-6128.

Thank you, again, for your help with this study!

Best regards,

Mark C. Bolino

Today, at the weekly staff meeting, you and the other employees in your department were discussing the annual budgeting process that is scheduled to start next month. In the past, this has been a frustrating project because it takes a lot of time and it seems like corporate administration always cuts the department’s requests. Although everyone in the department is busy and generally prefers not to challenge standard operating practices, Terry (one of your co-workers) spoke up and suggested changes to the normal budgeting process in order to make a positive contribution to the organization. Based on your past experience of working with Terry, you are fairly certain that this behavior represents Terry’s attempt to look good to others in the organization. Also, based on corporate policy, you know that Terry’s annual performance appraisal is scheduled for next month.

Today, at the weekly staff meeting, you and the other employees in your department learned that Sandy (one of your co-workers) may be seriously ill. More than likely, Sandy will have to take a medical leave of absence and will probably be out of work for the next month or so. Consequently, your department needs someone to handle Sandy’s responsibilities during this absence. Although everyone in the department is very busy and helping out would only create an additional burden for them, Chris (another of your co-workers) volunteered to perform the extra work in order to help the group and make a positive contribution to the organization.
